Summer Learning Program K-5

Middleborough Public Schools is offering a summer enrichment program for incoming students in grades K-5. We offer fun learning opportunities grounded in the skills and topics within our curriculum frameworks aligned to the grade level(s) audience for each course..

Policies and Procedures
Students are expected to adhere to the expectations for student behavior, dress, and participation outlined in the student handbook for kindergarten through fifth grade.  

Program Location
MPS Summer Enrichment will be held at:
Henry B. Burkland Elementary School
 41 Mayflower Avenue
Middleborough, MA

For arrival and dismissal, please enter the property from the rear driveway, which is located directly across the street from Hannafords Plaza on Route 28 (East Grove Street).

Arrival at HBB
All vehicles will enter and exit from the rear driveway on Route 28. 
Students must remain in their car until a staff member instructs the child to leave the car to walk into the gym at 9:30 AM. Look for the 2 orange cones to pull between.

Dismissal at HBB
All vehicles will enter and exit from the rear driveway on Route 28. 
All vehicles will park in the rear of the gym to pick up their child. There will be a tented area to sign out your student.
Students will only be dismissed to the parent/guardian listed on the program registration form. 
Parents/guardians should be prepared to show identification upon picking up their child(ren). 
Dismissal begins at 11:15AM and ends at 11:30AM.

Program Schedule
This is a four-week program that runs Monday through Thursday from 
9:30 AM - 11:30 AM.

Week 1: July 7-10
Week 2: July 14-17
Week 3: July 21-24
Week 4: July 28-31

Attendance
Attendance will be taken each morning. It is important that we have up-to-date information for the safety of all students who have registered for the program.  If a student will not be attending the program on any given day, please call the Burkland school at (508) 946-2040 or email clemieux@middleboro.k12.ma.us and ask for Cassandra Lemieux, Program Coordinator.

Program Preparation
Please send your student to camp with a small cinch bag or backpack containing the following in case of outdoor classes and events:
Sunscreen
Water bottle
Bug Spray

Registration Dates: May 26, 2025- June 13, 2025

Registration 
Enrollment is only for incoming Middleborough students at the Mary K. Goode and Burkland schools. 
Late registration will NOT be accepted. Registration officially closes at 3:30PM on June 13th.

Submitting Registration and Payment
All registration should be submitted along with payment by Friday, June 13, 2025. Please note that a child is not fully registered until payment is received. Payment must be made in the form of a check or an online payment.

The check should be made out to Middleborough Public Schools for $50 per registered week. Please write your student’s name in the memo line .

*Reminder: If you are enrolling for more than one week and paying online, you will have to complete this for each week.

Summer Enrichment must have complete contact and emergency information in order for each student to participate in the program. Incomplete registration forms will not be accepted and will be returned. Enrollment confirmation will be sent home no later than Monday, June 16 , 2025. Summer Enrichment reserves the right to cancel or combine classes for any reason. If a class is canceled, you will be notified and your payment will be returned.

Scholarship
Summer Enrichment offers financial support to eligible families. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like to be considered for financial aid. Please email CLemieux@Middleboro.k12.ma.us for information and questions about the scholarship.

Refunds
No refunds will be given after the last day of the registration period unless a class is canceled.

Innovation and Building

Paper Airplane Engineering

3rd-5th

Soar the skies in the Paper Airplane Club! With the power of paper folds and creativity, students will learn to engineer different airplane styles. Students will create and test different designs while learning how aerodynamics play a role in elevating their paper airplanes and making them fly. The sky’s the limit!

Reading Rainforest

1st and 2nd

An adventurous, academic-based class that will help K–2 students strengthen phonics,

letter-sound knowledge, blending, segmenting, sight word recognition, and early reading

fluency—all through interactive games, songs, stories, and hands-on exploration. The class will

have daily themes and activities such as letters and sound hunts, read-alouds, sight word safari,

and so much more.

Passport to Reading

1st-3rd

Fun class where students will travel to a new country each day through books, storytelling,

crafts, music, and academic exploration. While having fun, students will strengthen reading

comprehension, vocabulary, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Each day will feature a

country’s storybook, fun facts, basic map skills, and a themed hands-on craft or activity. Students

will create their own reading passport, earning a “stamp” for each destination! This could be a

great class for our MLL learners as it is focused on building confidence in reading, writing, and

speaking

Scientific Method Camp

4th and 5th

Students in the upper elementary grades will become familiar with the scientific method by

learning about the steps in detail and practicing the steps in a hands-on way. Each day, students

will practice the scientific method by doing a different activity that involves all of the steps:

observation/asking a question, research, hypothesis, experimentation, data collection/analysis,

revise hypothesis, second experiment, data collection/analysis, conclusion, discussion.

Coding,Engineering, and You!!

3rd-5th

Students will learn how to develop and create coding and engineering projects to solve problems and puzzles. They will also develop their understanding of how coding and engineering are utilized in our everyday lives. And how we can use these fields to improve lives for ourselves and others!

Tales Through Time

3rd-5th

Join us on an exciting adventure through different time periods! In this engaging class, students will explore a new historical period each day through hands-on activities, interactive read-alouds, and creative writing. Each day, students will dive into a different time in history and then craft a short story or diary entry from the perspective of a child living in that era. This course offers a unique way to experience history through art, storytelling, and exploration.

The Game of Life

In this course, students will be exposed to Social Studies concepts, such as community helpers, map skills, government and citizens, and basic economics. Students will decide their own careers, create their own community, learn about the concept of money, and what it means to be a good citizen. This course will also review literacy and mathematical skills used in the first and second grade.

Spectacular Storytelling

This class will explore using theatrical tools to bring classic fairy tales or children’s books to life. Using theatre games to build connection and confidence, we will start off each class strong. We will then learn how to analyze a story, build a character and create an environment using material that students are already familiar with. This class will encourage creativity and individuality while learning how to work together as a team to bring a story to life.

Reduce, Reuse, Reinvent

Have you ever looked at a household item wondering if it could have another purpose? Have you ever wanted to strengthen your creativity using materials that you already have? If you said, yes, then this class is for you! Utilizing recycled materials and other basic household items, we will create beautiful masterpieces and learn to be creative in a new way! Whether it’s painting using different items as a brush or building sculptures from recycled materials, this class will teach you how to use your imagination to create something extraordinary using ordinary items

Instrument Exploration for Beginners

3rd-5th

Are you in 3rd grade and getting ready to start playing an instrument in the fall? Are you in 4th or 5th grade and wish you’d chosen to play an instrument? This session is for you! We will explore a variety of woodwind, brass, percussion and stringed instruments and help you find the right one for you to have fun and be successful.

This session is for anyone in 4th or 5th grade who plays a band instrument and wants to continue to play and learn! We’ll have some small group instruction with the help of some high school students and play as a whole group as well. We’ll have a small concert at the end of the week.

Explore the wide world of music through singing, dance, drumming and more! Students will engage in a variety of musical activities that help them learn to create music, perform music, respond to music and connect music and the world around them.
