Communication/ Social
- Read or read aloud: Students can work on their vocabulary, sequencing, and retelling of the story. Encourage your child to visualize (make a picture in their mind) about what is happening in the story. Visualization is a great strategy to improve comprehension.
- Board Games: Board games can be a great way for students to use communication skills and facilitate positive social interactions. Students can practice their topic maintenance skills, sharing, and turn taking. Games such as Hedbanz are great for building reasoning skills and use of descriptive language. Have the student describe the picture using key features (color, size, shape, function etc.). If you do not have the game you can print/draw pictures and tape them to a hat or make a paper headband.
- Cooking: Cooking with students can be a great way to elicit conversation and work on their ability to follow directions. Students can work on comprehension of directions. Label objects in the kitchen to expose them to new vocabulary words. Ask problem solving questions such as “What can we use to spread the peanut butter?” or “Where do we find the eggs”?.
- Conversations: Brainstorm with students on some conversation topics to use with family members during dinner/leisure time. Students have been working on speaking about topics that they may have in common with someone.
- Social Language/ Non-verbal cues: Watch a movie or show with you child and ask questions such as “ I wonder why that character is so mad”, “That character seems frustrated, what do you see that tells you he is frustrated” or “ I wonder why that character did that (perspective taking)”. This will assist students in interpreting nonverbal cues of characters.
- Feelings Game: Provides a feeling and asks the student to pick the face that best represents that emotion https://do2learn.com/games/feelingsgame/index.htm
- -Problem Solving: Questions Game: Tell your child you are thinking of a word and provide the category to that word. Have the child ask questions to figure out the word. As the child gets better, provide a larger category or none at all (i.e. Food- Fruit) or if it is a struggle, provide them with a category that has less options.

Community Service
While you are at home the next few weeks, I encourage you all, especially seniors who have not completed their 24 service hours, to engage in one of the letter writing opportunities below.
There are a lot of people feeling anxious or bored and isolated and a letter could provide them with much needed contact. You can share some things about your life and current situation, express empathy for their current lack of social interactions, and let them know that people are thinking of them.
- Soldiers’ Angels: Write letters to our military members stationed overseas! Contact: Irene Wise at imw2000@comcast.net
- Middleborough Council on Aging (COA): Volunteers deliver 160 meals everyday to residents who cannot go out and would love to include letters to lift spirits. You can write letters with large script and email to smcgurk@middleboro.k12.ma.us who will get them to the COA for delivery.
- Shaw, Nemasket, & Oak Hill Centers: Write letters to patients in a healthcare center. These vulnerable residents are not allowed to have visitors for as long as the crisis lasts. You can share some things about yourself, your own experiences hunkering down, and let them know that their community remembers them. Send letters to smcgurk@middleboro.k12.ma.us who will get them to the healthcare centers for delivery.
- Make Masks for Health Care Professionals - Watch this vidoe to learn how. Please email Mrs. Tumavicus at mtumavicus@middleboro.k12.ma.
us once you complete your masks and she can help you with getting them to medical professionals in need.
Each letter will earn you one hour of Community Service credit. Ms. Wise and I will keep track of the letters and input your hours. If you want to know more about the Community Service requirement follow this link https://www.middleboro.k12.ma.us/domain/1022. Feel free to email me with any questions! smcgurk@middleboro.k12.ma.us
Thank you for spreading cheer to those in need of it! - Mrs. McGurk

Music Courses (Mr. Pittsley & Mr. Converse)
American Popular Music
Our Generation Activity
Consider the last decade (2010– 2019). Take a look back at the defining moments of these years. This decade is the decade you became teenagers and young adults, it will be the years that will define your generation when we look back 100 years from now.
How do you want your generation to be remembered in textbooks 100 years from now?
What do you want to define your generation?
What impact did your generation have on the global society we live in?
Focus Areas
- Important Historical Events of the decade and their significance for your generation. You may also address the beginning of 2020. There have certainly been plenty of events that have had an impact in your lives!
- Culture, Fads and Fashions (What was popular?)
- Music (What styles of music were mainstream, gaining popularity, declining, etc. Who were the noteworthy musicians?)
- Predictions for the next 10 years (music, culture, science, etc.) – where is music headed and why? What will your generation accomplish and be remembered for?
Complete the following:
- Research your topic thoroughly. Collect information that can be used to create a presentation of the material.
- Create a presentation to display what you found. Be creative! You can create a digital presentation (Google Slides, Prezi, etc.), a poster, a website, a scrapbook...more the more creative the better.
Share it with me when you are done! I’d love to see what your ideas were.
- What’s Your Favorite Album? Activity
Choose your favorite album of all time. It should be an album by one artist (not a compilation). Choose one of the following:
Option 1
Study your selected album and identify 10 objects that represent the album in some way. You must present each of the items in such a way as to help the audience understand how the object represents the album. This can be done as a class presentation, a video or screencast, or as a display with captions for each item. Be sure to incorporate song lyrics in your presentation in some way.
Option 2
Your selected album is up for discussion to be included in a time capsule that will be sealed until the year 2119. You have been asked to present a case for how the album is significant for the year 2019 and why it should be included.
Option 3
Your selected album is being considered for a best album Grammy award. The committee has requested an in-depth analysis of the album for them to use as they make their decision. Create a comprehensive analysis of the album (you may use whatever format you think works best).
Option 4
Create a well-designed graphic organizer that shows a thematic approach to the creation of the album and how the various tracks are interconnected. It should also address the requirements posted above. (This should not be a pencil/paper sketch - your product must be a minimum of a poster size).

Visual Arts Courses (Mr. Kenneally, Mr. Robert and Mr. Souza)
AP Art and Design:
- Develop ideas and document your process(es) for your Sustained Investigation.
- Visit the Institute of Contemporary Art’s website www.icaboston.org and view the current exhibitions. Find an artist’s work that you find interesting and try to come up with a guiding question that the artist may have used in developing their ideas and creating their artwork.
Studio Art and Design II:
- Visit the Museum of Fine Arts Boston’s website www.mfa.org
- Observe how the artists arranged their objects within their still life paintings to create a balanced composition. How many objects have the artists chosen to incorporate in their still life?
- Where is the artist’s light source?
- Has the artist used strong value contrasts to create visual interest?
- Is there significance to the objects that the artist has chosen to include within their still life?
- Go to the “Collections Search” section of the website and refine your search to view “Still Life Paintings”
- View the numerous Still Life Paintings that can be found at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston
- Arrange a still life of objects found in your kitchen and do a graphite drawing of your still life in your sketchbooks. Try to create visual interest within your drawing by having a dramatic light source on your objects, creating strong value contrasts. Is it possible to take ordinary, everyday objects that we may find boring and turn them into an interesting piece of artwork?
Art and Design Foundations
- Visit the Museum of Fine Arts Boston’s website www.mfa.org
- Try to observe your facial features as “shapes of values” instead of outlines.
- Pay careful attention to your light source and how it creates shadows defining the planes of your face.
- Read the brief description and view the images for the exhibit “Lucian Freud: The Self-Portraits”
- Create a self-portrait in your sketchbook by looking in a mirror.
Drawing for Beginners (Souza)
Enrichment activities can be found in your Google Classroom
- Artists are well suited to adapt to the current situation of social isolation because we can always turn to DRAWING to occupy our time!
- Here are some additional resources: 100 Sketchbook Prompts. Just choose your favorites, and DRAW. https://theartofeducation.edu/2019/10/08/100-sketchbook-prompts-ebook/

Drawing for Beginners (Roberts/Gagne)
- All things are posted in your Google Classroom as noted earlier
- During this time feel free to explore things from the homework list you have...these are just reinforcing the skills you know! While not necessary, doing this will greatly increase the opportunities to do projects once we return.
- In addition, under the “Forms” topic, you will see supplied drawings. One called “3 Form Still Life” and the other called “Still Life With Cylinders”. These are things you have already worked on and I would suggest reproducing them, to size, in your sketchbooks….Maybe incorporate a different direction for the light source and try to interpret what they would look like then...or maybe even set up a still life of your own!! As always, a value scale done in the upper corner always helps!
- Set up a still life with objects in your house! Apply what you know about contour, shapes, and value to create your own, original, piece of art!!
- Fill up your sketch book with things you like to draw...the sky's the limit!!
- Feel free to send me @ Mroberts@middleboro.k12.ma.us with photos with any questions or suggestions!!
Digital Imaging I (Roberts/Gagne)
- All things are posted in your Google Classroom as noted earlier
- While it is not a perfect solution, it will give us the opportunity to work with an online version of Photoshop (although a weaker version) called Photopea. You don’t have to download anything! it’s all browser supported!!
- To start, go to the topics in Google Classroom and look for “Photopea”. In one tab, open www.photopea.com , and in another tab, watch the introductory video to see what this is all about and try the project they do in it...you got this!
- There are many more tutorials to explore and have fun with! https://www.photopea.com/tuts/
- Later, in Photopea, I want you to do all the things we covered under “ The Basics” in the beginning of the year. That is, tools like; Lasso, Magic Wand, Selection, Burn, Dodge, etc. etc. Recreate the same assignments but using Photopea. They may not all work the same...that is ok, just try to find a solution! This will greatly help us out in seeing if this program is a viable option for Photoshop ( I have used Photopea often so I know it pretty well ;) ). Lasly, maybe try out other things...can you do the sketch assignment on Photopea?? I’m interested in what you find out!!
- As always, email me @ Mroberts@middleboro.k12.ma.us with any questions or suggestions!!
Digital Imaging 1 (Souza)
- You may make up any missing past assignments via Google Classroom.
- For those up-to-date...
- I might suggest, with your parents permission installing GIMP, probably the closest FREE program to Photoshop https://www.gimp.org/
- There is a great list of tutorials on their website that you may try out. https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/
- Here is a list of great image editing Apps for Apple IOS and ANDROID. https://www.oberlo.com/blog/best-photo-editing-apps-iphone-android I highly suggest Adobe Photoshop Express, I use it myself!
- Take LOTS of pictures! Whether around your house or the neighborhood, beauty is everywhere. Go find it! We can discuss your best shots. Here is a great video on taking your best shots with your phones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyj_Hmz1_L4
Feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns and feedback to asouza@middleboro.k12.ma.us
Digital Imaging 2 (Souza)
- You may make up any missing past assignments via Google Classroom.
- Many of the resources above will pertain to you as well! I would highly recommend reviewing the readings on google classroom on compositions, and just keep shooting.
- Here are some other resources that you may use to create stronger, more interesting images.
- The COOPH (The Cooperative of Photography) YouTube channel has some great tips, tricks and DIY projects that many of you could do at home with your cell phone, or if you own a DSLR like we have in class.
- Please review article “How Critiquing the Work of Others Improves Your Own” https://fstoppers.com/education/how-critiquing-photography-others-improves-your-own-307560, Look at Photos, search photography blogs, use these tips to analyze what is and what isn’t working well in the images you view. We will have a group discussion when we all meet again.
Feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns and feedback to asouza@middleboro.k12.ma.us
Calligraphy I (Roberts/Gagne)
- All things are posted in your Google Classroom , please visit!
- During this time I would like to get a “Jump” on things we will be doing in the future. While not necessary, doing this will greatly increase the opportunities to do projects once we return.
- Under the topic,“Cinquain” you will see an example of what a Cinquain is and what the finished product will look like for this project. Write one in Google docs and also, search the internet for a border you would like to have accompany the poem once finished.
- Secondly under the topic “Portrait”, you will see the same as you did in the Cinquain topic, an example of what the project will look like and so forth. For this you will need to do some serious writing, generally it takes about 500-700 words to do an entire portrait (this would have been an upcoming homework assignment). What you need to do is create, in a Google Document, a “self portrait” using words. All these words should be words that say something about you (likes, dis-likes, favorite foods...anything...just keep it appropriate :) ). You can use song lyrics….I have even had students write about a very special day/moment in their life. The object is that if someone reads it, they get a feel for who you are!! Lastly...start looking for a front view portrait/selfie of yourself. We will need this to create the template all these words will be used for. Once you have one, email it to me as I have to manipulate it in Photoshop. If it won’t work, I’ll let you know to find another.
- As always, email me @ Mroberts@middleboro.k12.ma.us with any questions or suggestions!!
Calligraphy II
- All things are posted in your Google Classroom , please visit!
- Learn about the influence you will be using in an upcoming project, Illuminated Manuscripts! Short History of Illuminated Manuscripts
- During this time I would like to get a “Jump” on things we will be doing in the future. While not necessary, doing this will greatly increase the opportunities to do projects once we return.
- For your consideration, under the topic “Alphabet Flash Cards”, you will see an example of what the project will look like and so forth. For this you will need to do some image searches. First, think of the topic for your cards ( can be food, cars, animals, etc.) and then, in a Google Document create a list. The list should be alphabetical, from A-Z, and each letter should represent something that begins with the selected letter and falls within your topic. Once you compile your list, start searching for images for each item, such as an Apple for A, etc. Look for images using the search parameters like “Stock Art” or “coloring page”. That way they are very simple images that you can trace, or draw, very easily when the time comes (see images in G.C. for examples).
- Secondly, I also want you to consider writing something in Google Docs, for another upcoming project. This will need to be under 200 words and I want you to write about something special to you. To get an idea of why, look under the topic “Illuminated Manuscripts”...you’ll be creating something like this :)
- As always, email me @ Mroberts@middleboro.k12.ma.us with any questions or suggestions!!
Theatre Courses (Ms. Duggan)
Intro to Theatre -
- Continue to develop your original Ancient Greek plays. Make sure you have shared your scripts with everyone in the group.
- Revisit the videos in Google Classroom on Ancient Greek Theatre.
- Enrichment Activity: I will be posting videos on the Stanislavsky Acting System and examples of exercises and performances using the technique in our google classroom. Get into the habit and checking in and see if something interests you.
Theatre II -
- Continue working on the written analysis for you Beckett pieces.
- Now is a great time to really watch some of Beckett’s full length pieces - revisit “Waiting for Godot”, see what you can pick up with a second viewing. Beckett embeds subtle differences and subtext that only really reveal themselves with multiple exposures. “Endgame” is excellent as well. The version in google classroom has Michael Gambon in it playing Hamm. Continue to explore his shorter works and pieces for radio and film.
- Enrichment Activity: in preparation for our next Unit on Bertolt Brecht I will be posting videos, documentaries and plays by Brecht in our google classroom. His style is unique and in complete contradiction to Stanislavski’s ideas. Get into the habit of checking into google classroom and see if anything interests you.
Theatre III -
- If you have brought “The Birthday Party” home with you then continue to read the play, making observations only. Start with just keeping track of use of language, stories that were told by characters, given circumstances, etc.
- I will create a google doc and share with everyone for you to record your observations.
- Feel free to comment on each other’s observations. I will join in as well!
- Use some time to continue working on scripts for That’s E. At this point we will still pull something together for a show! Mr. Pittsley and myself have been discussing a possible Pops Concert/That’s E mash-up. We’ll make it work!
- Enrichment Activity: I will be posting videos of documentaries, plays and films by Pinter in our google classroom. Get into the habit of checking in and see if something interests you. There’s some great stuff to view which will help you unpack Pinter’s style
Public Speaking -
- For those of you who have not presented your Demo speech, occasionally look over your outline and refresh your process for the presentation.
- While class: begin to brainstorm and research topic ideas for your Persuasive speech. Remember topics are usually around trying to change your audience’s opinion or method of doing something. For example, stop using plastic bottles or add a yoga class to your weekly exercise routine. Continue to think about hobbies, beliefs, strengths that you have that you can share with the class.
- Enrichment Activity: I will be posting a variety of videos on different speech modes, tips and techniques in our google classroom. Get into the habit of checking in and see what’s available. Feel free to add any videos or content that you find and would like to share with the class.
