Dr. Melanie R. Gates
Dr. Melanie R. Gates serves the Middleborough Public Schools as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Prior to this role she served as the Director of Secondary Education for STEM, Science and Technology Department Head, and Science Teacher at Middleborough High School. Dr. Gates spent ten years as a teacher in our high school, where she taught a range of classes within the science, technology, and mathematics departments. During that time she began the Advanced Placement Chemistry program at Middleborough High School in 2007. Aside from teaching, Dr. Gates was an active member of the high school community; she served on School Council for several years, was a class advisor, a mentor, field hockey coach, and volunteered on numerous committees.
Dr. Gates served as the Lead Teacher for the Southeast Cohort for the Massachusetts Math and Science Initiative for two years, working with Middleborough and other districts in our area to improve their Advanced Placement Science programs.
Outside of the role of Director Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Gates likes to travel and learn about education systems across the world. She has participated in professional development study tours to Ecuador and the Galapagos, Thailand, Costa Rica, Iceland, and a Global Leaders Summit in Finland and Switzerland. Each of these experiences has shaped her thinking in how we are to prepare our students to excel as educated, responsible, global citizens.
