     Singing

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!!   Our Kindergartners are jingling all the way into the new year.  We are brightening up the dark and dreary days of December with many fun songs and activities that echo the cheery feelings of Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, the New Year and Holiday fun. Students will learn traditional holiday songs from many December and January holidays such as: Jingle Bells, Up on the Housetop, Dreidle Dreidle, Rudolph, Frosty, Hanukkah O Hanukkah, O Kwanzaa, The Twelve Days of Christmas, and Feliz Navidad,

     Instruments and Instrument Manners

We will also use a variety of instruments to to accompany our singing.  We will be focused on using instruments to create a steady beat throughout a piece of music as well as playing a sound on specific words in  a song.  We will  spend a lot of time practicing  bells, sticks and maracas while using good performance etiquette and instrument manners. We will learn how to keep our instruments still and quiet, when it is not time to play and also how to pass out, handle and put away instruments safely.

    Movement

Wiggly Kindergartners LOVE to move and we do a lot of it in music class. We will perform a series of ballet moves to the Twelve Days of Christmas that is sure to get out all of our extra energy.  Likewise, we will be feeling the island beat, as we dance to Feliz Navidad, while singing in Spanish. Also, no rendition of Jingle Bells is complete without clip clop feet sounds to mimic horses.

    Literacy

During the Month of December, students will experience a number of print versions of some of our favorite songs.  One of my favorites is I Have A Little Dreidle, by Maxie Baum. This picture book depicts a family celebrating Hannukah in their home. Children sing the traditional dreidle song while learning about other Jewish customs.  Students will also enjoy Jingle Bells by Iza Trapani; this text follows the magical sleigh ride of a group of children, as they visit many countries around the globe to experience different Christmas customs.  My students always enjoy seeing how diverse Christmas traditions can be. Finally, we will also be reading Ten on the Sled,  by Kim Norman, a fun story about a crew of Arctic forest animals, who sing new lyrics to the traditional song "Ten in the Bed" and practice some subtraction in the process.

    Jingle Bells

    Dashing through the snow,
In a one horse open sleigh.

    All the fields we go,
    Laughing all the way.

    Bells on bobtails ring
    Making spirits bright.

What fun it is to ride and sing
    A sleighing song tonight.

    Oh, Jingle bells, jingle bells,
    jingle all the way.
Oh what fun it is to sing
    A sleighing song tonight!
    Jingle bells, jingle bells
    Jingle all the way.
Oh what fun it is to sing a sleighing song tonight!

    I Have a Little Dreidle

    dreidle

    Well
    I have a little dreidel
I made it out of clay
And when it's dry and ready
    Then, dreidel I shall play.

    Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
I made it out of clay
And when it's dry and ready
    Then, dreidel I will play.

    It has a lovely body
With legs so short and thin
And when it gets all tired
It drops and I will win.

    Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
I made it out of clay
And when it's dry and ready
    Then, dreidel I will play.

    My dreidel is so playful
It loves to dance and spin
    A happy game of dreidel
    Come play now, let's begin.

    Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
I made it out of clay
And when it's dry and ready
    Then, dreidel I will play.
