Physical Education/Fitness Program Changes
As a department our goal is to provide our students with a strong foundation to live an active lifestyle as they grow older. With that being said, we have decided to make changes to our program for this coming school year. Beginning this fall students will remain with the same physical education teacher throughout the entire school year. Our hopes is that this will increase student learning, teacher-student relationships, parent communication, and ability to report all necessary information in a timely manner. Changing to this design will also allow us to align our unit instruction with the trimesters, providing extended learning time for important skills and concepts each unit.
In terms of medical excuses, we will be maintining the policy we have had in place. We are very understanding of the injuries and illnesses the students experience over the course of the school year. As a department we have had the policy that if a parent writes a note for a student to excuse a student from participating in class for a day, that is acceptable. However, if your son or daughter needs to miss a second class we do need a note from a doctor to excuse the participation, a second note from a parent will not be accepted. Also in terms of medical notes, we receive a note from a doctor which states a specific date to return, the child cannot participate until that date; if a doctor writes that the child cannot participate until cleared, we are not allowed to have a child return to class until we receive a clearance note from a doctor as well. A child excused from participation for an extended period of time with a doctor's note will not be penalized; depending on a situation may be provided with an alternative assignment to still further his or her learning.
