PTA
Committee List
Advocacy Committee: This is a committee where
parents, teachers, administrators and others can discuss concerns, gather
information, and advocate for the children in our community. The hope is that this committee would consist
of a diverse group of people and promote a diverse range of issues; but are
united in the commitment to successfully advocate on our children’s
behalf. This group would be responsible
for gathering information in regard to the school budget, and would share this
information with parents and voters.
This committee would seek to support and speak on behalf of our children
at school, in the community and before governmental bodies and other
organizations that make decisions affecting children.
Bake Sale: The bake sale committee coordinates bake
sales at various school events throughout the year. This includes soliciting bake sale donations
as well as scheduling volunteers to staff the bake sale table.
Book Fair: The Scholastic Book Fair takes place for two
to three weeks in the fall. Planning is
required throughout the year. Committee
member’s responsibilities include all correspondence with Scholastic, setting
up and dismantling the fair, advertisement, scheduling volunteers, compiling
teacher wish list and distributing books to the teachers.
Box Tops/Labels for Education: Committee members oversee the collection and
tallying of labels and box tops, as well as periodic mailings to claim proceeds
for the schools. Various collection
sites are set up throughout the town and in each school.
Burkland School Lunch Bunch Book Club: Book clubs
are run during student lunches. Students
read an age appropriate book and meet each week to discuss what has been
read. Groups are led by parent
volunteers. Students pack a lunch from
home on the day of the book club and meet in a pre-determined place with the
parent volunteer. This committee is
responsible for notifying the Burkland students and
parents of the book club, assigning parent volunteers to run the clubs, and the
overall organization and facilitation of the book clubs. Books have been purchased by the PTA in the
past and we hope to continue to fund this very worthwhile cause.
Calendar: The yearly calendar is created using artwork
from students K-5. Each year a theme is
chosen for the calendar. Students work
with the art teachers to illustrate the theme.
A date is chosen and families vote on the anonymous drawings. The drawings that receive the most votes end
up in the calendar. Members of the
calendar committee are responsible for communication with the art teachers,
printing and production of the calendar, coordination of the judging, and
calendar sales.
Cultural Enrichment: The Cultural
Enrichment Committee is responsible for researching potential performers,
coordinating dates and times with school administrators and performers, being
present to welcome the performer on the day of the show, distributing and
collecting teacher feedback surveys, and advertising performances. This committee works throughout the school
year.
Fundraising: This committee is responsible for choosing the types of fundraisers
the PTA will participate in (with the approval of administration/Superintendent
as needed). This committee is
responsible for any and all aspects of the fundraisers chosen.
Green Team: This committee is responsible for researching
and implementing (with approval from the PTA membership and/or Central Office
as needed) initiatives that would allow our PTA and the School System to be
more “Green.” This may include things
like reducing waste and recycling, formulating a data base of people willing to
receive information on line or via email, and any other ideas that will lead to
a more earth friendly and efficient process.
This will need to be a coordinated effort between PTA members willing to
staff this committee, building administration and Central Office.
Kindergarten Registration: Kindergarten
registration takes place at the end of March.
This committee is responsible for scheduling volunteers for the various
stations as well as maintaining a daily presence throughout the week to assist
wherever needed.
Mini Grants: Each year the PTA distributes
mini grants to the teachers. In the past
we have done this many ways. The
teachers have applied for the grants, we have divided the money equally between
the three schools, and we have awarded each teacher a Staples gift card. The
PTA decides how the allocated money will be spent and the committee is
responsible for overseeing this process.
Public Relations: This committee/person is
responsible for informing the general public of activities and programs the PTA
is sponsoring or taking part in. This
could include information regarding the book fair, cultural enrichment
performances brought in for the students and any other activities the PTA is
involved in. The committee would send
information to the local paper, as well as any other appropriate media outlets,
such as the cable access channel.
SHARP: SHARP is the PTA sponsored summer enrichment
program. It runs for two weeks during
the summer. The half day courses are
taught by parents and teachers. This
committee is responsible for sending out forms soliciting teachers for the
classes, sending out registration forms for students to choose their classes,
and scheduling volunteers to help out during the SHARP program.
Teacher Appreciation: The first
week of May is Teacher Appreciation Week.
This committee plans various treats and surprises for the teachers and
staff throughout the week for the staff in all of our schools. Most of the preparation takes place a few
weeks before Teacher Appreciation Week.
This committee is responsible for organizing volunteers to bake and prepare
goodies, purchasing paper goods and scheduling and coordinating delivery of
items to each of the schools.
