GUIDANCE MAY & JUNE CALENDARS

College Application Process Slideshow
Presented on September 28th

ATTENTION PARENTS: The next parent conferences will take place on Monday, May 14th at 6 p.m.  Progress reports will be issued either on Friday, May 11th or Monday, May 14th at the end of the day.

ATTENTION SENIORS/PARENTS OF SENIORS: The local community scholarship deadline has passed (April 13).  All selected scholarship recipients will be notified during the Senior Last Assembly on May 31st at 6 p.m. in the Wayne Caron Auditorium.  Graduation day is set for Saturday, June 2, 2012.  Congrats to all seniors!

ATTENTION SENIORS: If you are planning to apply to college this year, you must fill out a yellow Autobiographical Sketch form for your guidance counselor.  In order for us to send your transcript and letters of recommendation to the colleges, you must also fill out a Transcript Release form.  Both forms must be turned in at least two weeks before your college's application deadline!  It is also important to note that the guidance office does not send SAT or ACT scores to colleges.  Please visit www.collegeboard.com to have SATs sent and www.actstudent.org to have your ACT scores sent.  Please take a look at the Guidance Newsletter for everything that you need to know in order to navigate the college application process this year.

ATTENTION PARENTS: The ELA MCAS re-test will be given on February 29, March 1 & 2 to those students who have failed the test previously.

The Mathematics MCAS re-test will be given on March 5 & 7.  All sophomores with 30 or more credits will take the full-spring MCAS beginning on March 20th with the ELA Long Composition, and reading comprehension on March 21-22.  The Mathematics test will take place on May 15 & 16.  The next Biology MCAS will take place on June 5 & 6.

ATTENTION JUNIORS: The guidance department will be visiting junior classes in the month of March to talk about the college process.  If you would like to meet with your guidance counselor before or after the presentations, please fill out an appointment sheet in guidance and indicate that you would like to have a meeting to discuss college.

COURSE CHANGE REQUESTS (Taken from Page 14 of the Program of Studies)
The course selection process begins in the second semester of each school year. Efforts are made to provide a thorough explanation of all course levels, prerequisites and the content and skill mastery each course requires and/or develops. The faculty gives recommendations to each student and opportunities for parent involvement are provided each step of the process. Therefore, each student should make responsible and informed decisions regarding course selections.  Students in grades 9-12 experience a broad based, challenging high school curriculum.  Most courses are leveled, with specific requirements for continuation or acceptance into the next level. Each course is assigned a credit value, and courses, course levels, amount of credit and grades determine graduation from Middleborough High School. Students must take an active role in course selection.  We build the entire schedule and assign faculty based upon course requests that we receive from students and parents during the selection process. Requests for course changes after the selection time will only be honored due to extraordinary circumstances after appropriate school personnel have carefully considered the reasons for the proposed changes and only if space and resources are available. However, requests for change such as disliking a course, underestimating the course expectations, selecting or deselecting a specific teacher, wishing to take an easier course, not realizing what the course would be like, or wanting to be in class with friends are inappropriate reasons for a schedule change and will not be honored. “Changes of mind” are not permitted. Students should select courses carefully. Once selections have been made and classes formed, it is extremely difficult to make changes.  Once the school year begins, few course changes should be needed. If a student requests a change, he/she must go through a process that includes written justification and a meeting with the principal. Changes are subject to course availability and educationally sound requests. All requests require review by the assistant principal’s, faculty, department heads, directors, counselors, and parent. The principal makes all final decisions regarding course changes.
